Introduction
Government Polytechnic for Women, Jammu,
was established in the year 1988 in Maheshpura, for imparting
technical training to young women of Jammu and Kashmir State
and meet the technical education requirements for upliftment
of the women folk.
Initially, the Polytechnic extended the technical
and vocational education services to the female students of
society in the following disciplines.
- Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering
- Secretarial Practice
- Beauty Culture.
The courses were updated/ diversified in
due course of time and at present Government Polytechnic for
Women, Jammu imarts training in the following disciplines:
- Electronics & Communication Engineering.
- Computer Engineering.
- Modern office Practices.
- Textile Designing.
- Medical Lab Technology.

This scheme aims at upgrading the standard
of technical education such that polytechnic pass-outs can
easily get absorbed in industry.
The project has provided infrastructure to
the institute in terms of hostel accommodation and well-equipped
laboratories and well-furnished library. New courses have
also been introduced under the project. These are:
- Textile Designing and
- Medical Laboratory Technology.
There is no denying the fact that the competent,
well-trained and devoted staff members of the polytechnic
are making commendable contributions to the project thereby
upgrading the academic standard of the institution. This is
a direct consequence of the mature and efficient guidance
of Shri I. J .S Bedi, the principal of the institution.
Finally, Government Polytechnic for Women,
which was started with the mission of upgrading the quality
of the women folk of J&K state, is making rapid strides
in achieving this mission.
