Govt. Polytechnic for Women Jammu was established in the year 1988 to meet the technical education requirements of female students of the society. The Polytechnic is situated at Lower Shiv Nagar Near AG’s office on the left bank of historical Ranbir canal at a distance of 2 kilometres from Jewel Chowk. The railway station is about 8 kilometres and airport is 10 kilometres away from the institution. It has newly constructed well equipped administrative block, academic block, hostel block, multipurpose hall and residential quarters. Some more construction in terms of residential quarters, playfields, textile department block etc. are coming up in near future.

At present the Polytechnic offers the following 3-years diploma programmes with an intake mentioned in brackets against each course. All these courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to J&K Board of Technical Education (BOTE).

  3. Office Management and Computer Applications - OMCA (30)
  4. Textile Designing (30)
  5. Medical Lab Technology -DMLT (30)
  6. Electrical Engineering (30)

Since its establishment the Institute has significantly improved its functioning and modes of delivery. At present industry oriented curricula at semester pattern are being implemented in all the existing courses. It has considerably improved placement of pass out students. All the faculty and staff members have been trained / retrained in latest technologies in various fields of engineering, technology and management. All the labs have been modernized by procuring state of art equipment. Library has been strengthened by procuring adequate number of books. Lots of learning resources have been procured, which facilitate in teaching learning process. The institute has Internet facility, EDUSAT facility and all other state of art facilities, which make it an institute par excellence.

The Polytechnic is authorized by MHRD Govt. of India to uplift the rural and urban slum women in particular by offering them non-formal skill development training programs, transfer of technology, technical and other support services under CDTP scheme. Short term job oriented courses are also being conducted under Continuing Education (IRG) scheme and in collaboration with other Govt. Organizations.
